The tower of Monas tells the story of the effort of Indonesian people to fight against colonialism. Monas was built to commemorate the resistance and struggle of the Indonesian people in gaining independence from the Dutch colonial government . Construction began on August 17, 1961 , under the orders of President Soekarno and was officially opened to the public on July 12, 1975 by President Soeharto . Monas is located in the center of Medan Merdeka, Jakarta . The rope is approximately 132 meters with a large square under the rope .
